What to do when a child is missing?

Your ability to act quickly when you child goes missing is a critical factor in bringing your child back safely. So what can you do to improve the odds?

If you have the Life Prints Child Safety System:

15 minutes

  • Remain calm.
  • If you have the Life-Prints Child ID system start the software, open the missing child's file, and do the following:
    • Print out at least 2 copies of the profile report (one copy will be to give to law-enforcement when they arrive one copy is for you) If you have kept your child’ profile updated it will provide much of the information you will need to give law-enforcement on your initial call and when they arrive in person.
  • Call your local law-enforcement agency (usually 911, but not always, as some phone systems and areas do not have 911 service).
  • Describe the circumstances of the child's disappearance.
  • If your child disappears in a store, notify the store manager or security office. Then immediately call your local law-enforcement agency per above.
  • When you call law enforcement, provide your child's name, date of birth, height, weight, and any other unique identifiers such as eyeglasses and braces. Tell them when you noticed that your child was missing and what clothing he or she was wearing. If you have kept your child’s Life-prints profile up to date most of this information can be read off the profile you printed.
  • Request that your child's name and identifying information be immediately entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Person File.
  • After you have reported your child missing to Law-enforcement call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) (1-800-843-5678) to advise them that your child is missing and obtain a NCMEC Case Number.
  • If you have the Life-Prints Child ID system start the software, open the missing child's file, and do the following:
    • Press the EMERGENCY BUTTON and follow the instructions. This will email your child’s profile to the local law-enforcement email address you entered and to NCMEC if they have given you a case number.
