The not-so-good old days
It was not until the early 1900s that fingerprinting really took off in the United States as a means of reliably identifying individuals. Once it caught hold, it quickly became the gold standard for identification for the FBI, local police, the military and other agencies. By 1946, more than 100 million prints were on file with the FBI. To date, 63 million sets of prints (in the organization's AFIS database) are on file with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security alone.

And, because the database is relatively small in comparison to AFIS's criminal print database (only an estimated, 2 percent of children have id cards, and most are not digitized), any existing matches can be found nearly instantaneously.
