Why use a child id card

Child ID CardThe January 2007 discovery of two missing Missouri boys - Ben Ownby, 13, gone for four days, and 15-year-old Shawn Hornbeck, who had disappeared for more than four years - garnered nationwide attention and renewed interest in issues surrounding child safety. (Product and protection techniques, such as the effective type and use of the child id card, will be discussed in detail in articles to follow.)

Both Ownby and Hornbeck were found inside the tiny, St. Louis County apartment of their captor, Michael Devlin. Hornbeck's parents, Craig and Pam Akers of Richwoods, Mo., were able to supply police investigators with a clear, high-quality photograph of Shawn, who was just 11 years old when abducted in October 2002. In Ben Ownby's case, an observant witness to the abduction provided police with a detailed description of the suspect's truck, which was later spotted outside Devlin's apartment by Kirkwood, Mo., police.

Child safety product advantages

Child Safety ProductBen's and Shawn's families had recent photos of their children. However, hard copies take time to scan and distribute, and other tools such as fingerprints and a ready made compilation of vital statistics about each of the boys were not available to police at the moment each went missing. Although neither of the boys' families had high-tech photo id software or identification products, it's easy to see how the use of a quality child id card or other law enforcement-recommended child safety product could have assisted police in their investigation of each of these kidnapping cases.

Imagine if, with a few quick mouseclicks, you could notify law enforcement agencies of a missing boy or girl and distribute clear, distinguishable pictures and vital identifying characteristics to the National Center for Missing Children almost instantaneously. It is impossible to say exactly how the outcome of the Hornbeck and Ownby abductions might have been affected if investigators had had instant access to this kind of information. But, in a worst-case scenario such as a kidnapping, where time is of the essence, every precious second counts. Every moment vital information is delayed is a moment tragically wasted.
